The term "Beta" refers to a program that hasn't been thoroughly tested to ensure that all the "bugs" are worked out of the program. Simply put, its a program that needs help!

The term "Beta Tester" refers to a person (or poor soul) that tests the beta program. The "Beta Tester" will note any problems with the program and will pass that information on the programmer (or manufacturer) so they may effect some sort of repair. "Beta" programs are NOT for the average user. Your average user does not have the experience to deal with the problems which "Beta's" inherently have. And so, it is our recommendation that if you are an inexperienced user, DO NOT get "Beta" programs.

Just wait for the public release of the program, this way you know that it has been tested. Yahoo! Messenger Beta: Over the last weeks and months, regular helpers have become frustrated with the influx of beta related problems. Oh sure, beta's offer new toys, features and in the case of the Yahoo! Messenger Beta, more of those dang smileys.  But beta does not mean better!  When you download a program specifically labeled as a beta, you should be prepared for it to fail or it to not work, and be prepared for it to drive you nuts in every effort to fix it.

Currently it seems as though people run willy-nilly to download a beta just because they think its better. It's not!  More than one new computer user has succumbed to the urge to get the beta and found themselves extremely frustrated. Or worse, new comp users blindly follow a suggestion or recommendation and find they are in over their head.

If you are not well versed in removal of programs and restoring previous versions, as well as reading the fine print first, I strongly suggest you do not download beta versions. Users of Yahoo! Messenger Beta have found that they can't restore a previous build of the messenger with out doing some file removal in addition to the add and remove options.  Internet explorer (IE 6.0 ) beta users found themselves unable to access many parts of Yahoo and found themselves unable to restore the previous build of their browser is another example.

These programs are not tested and are considered to be "still in the development" stage.

So, if you have to use a beta, if you can't wait, if you just got to play with the new toys first! Here are some tips:

  • Make sure it's got a bug report link!

  • Check the help pages and support info in advance and

  • Make sure you have the .exe or set up files for the version you currently have on your computer. For example: If you are installing Y's Messenger Beta build # 5, 1, 0, 1015, do you have a non beta version downloaded and saved? It is not a good idea to install a beta program that has no uninstall, no support, and no way to restore the previous versions.
