check to see if your name is available www.whois.net has a free domain name search...have several choices when you look...and buy it ASAP. I suggest www.godaddy.com for a price alone. a word here... there are now at lots of possible domain names. the new ones will not be cheap. again i strongly suggest you buy the name when you have searched, or you may lose it. many sites that offer free domain name searches actually watch the searched for names, and will snatch up ones searched for a certain number of times, thus preventing you from getting the name. they will often try to sell them for a much higher price on the secondary market.skip buying a name and redirecting to a free server site. that does not remove the freeservers ads, and costs almost as much as a real hosting option. the freeserver redirect will also be subject to the bandwidth restrictions and often will be "unavailable" every other hour. when i started domaining it.. i had the name, and the mail. but no site up.... at one point i pointed the name to my geocities pages, but found that there was NO support, no information, no help, nada... and many folks who tried to buy the name and host on geocities found that their credit card was charged but the name was never bought. this may happen on many of the large impersonal servers out there. then a friend in chat asked if i knew how to do something...and offered hosting for 6 months in exchange for some help... next thing you know... heh. lets just say the help has been awesome, the best hosting choice. consider this a commercial. i don't care.... but i have moved more friends, family, and just folks who came crying about their crappy hosting to my friend's servers at www.myraqs.com starting at $50 a year you get some awesome hosting including your name...yes i said a year!!! for example.... Hosting of www.yourdomain.com/net/org 100 Megs of space. 1 GB Transfer. Up to 25 User Accounts Web Based Site Administration FrontPage Server Extensions Active Server Pages (ASP) PHP Embedded Scripting CGI Scripting & lots more
take time to look around, there may be others with similar deals to MyRaqs. but be wary of those one time only fee domain hosting sites, or those who say all for $x a year. READ the fine print, and ask to speak to other clients. I have helped many who used other hosting, then found no support, long down times, and high charges to get tech support. ( i host all the sites i do for others on MyRaqs as well. ) nhyrvana is proud to have helped TWO RUGBUGS, FreeCreed, Shearologist, ItsMe7up, and many others through this maze :)
