i put it together  one weekend when my isp was seriously misbehaving and i wasn't able to get online. i just pilfered through my desk and  grabbed everything i had used in the last year on the computer. i got creative because i didn't like any of the containers in the house, and found nothing at the store i liked . i just took zip bags and taped them together on the left and right... side by side... there are 5 in a row, zips up nice and i can see everything in it.

my computer first aid kit ~ just put it all in one place, keep liquids from paper and cds and discs and  its ready to help you......or even better, its all nice and handy to run over to your moms, sisters, friends, and help them 'fix' their computer.

first item is my newbie cd ~ its a cd with a dozen or so programs that are tried and true need to have programs  ~ always good, because you don't need to download, just ready to install and update. extra great for folks on dial up ~ even though they are mostly small.  most of these are small enough to put on a disc as well. make your own with whatever programs you think are needed ~

then i have the rescue kit altogether in a nice  bag, ready to pick up or pilfer through. ( yes i know i need better pics.....  )

  • blank diskettes in a box
  • an aol cd... in case they have no isp at all and want to get online....... hey.. don't judge !
  • and my newbie cd

  • antistatic/ dust spray for electronics
  • cotton pads
  • cotton swabs
  • cable fasteners

  • scissors
  • tweezers
  • magnifying glass
  • pen flashlight
  • brush to get between keys etc.

  • a mouse that i KNOW works
  • phone cord ~ long and short
  • phone splitter
  • several different kinds of plug converters

other items i tossed in super glue, electrical tape, bandaids, postits, matches (inhaler ~ that's for me), hand lotion, a surge strip, bottle of alcohol, half roll of paper towels, index cards, pens, phillips and flat head screwdriver  ~ whatever you think you need or have used works great! its not set in stone what should be in the kit ~

these items cover a lot of problems you might run into.... and looks really slick when someone says. hey..... can you come look at my comp  and you show up all organized ....... it also keeps most of what you need in one place for emergencies. what's in your repair kit for your comp? have something  in there we don't? drop me a note

suggested  programs ~

a zip utility~ handy bits, winzip too many programs come in a zip format ~ so to open most you need this tool first.
a firewall~ zonealarm, tiny just pick one and use it, keep the bad guys out.
an antivirus~ avg, vcatch, pcillin what ever you can afford ~ and if you cant afford to pay right now, a trial or a nice freeware will do. ( bookmark the free online scanners too as a back up)
a graphics program~  ifran, painter 23, 32versee, abracadabra anything with the ability to support a lot of graphic file formats.... some of these also support several text formats. think small and free
adaware~ just cause they don't have the programs they need, doesn't mean that bubba didn't download some things they don't........
enditall ~ nice tool for closing ALL programs when its time to scan disc
cleaner utilities~  easy cleaner , cleanup
misc toys and trix~ icq, aim, ymessy ipclip, enigma/offbyone browser...... all sorts of little programs that you might want or need. a cd will hold 700MB so you can load plenty!

make sure to regularly update the cd you keep, nothing is more annoying than loading something that needs updated immediately.
