many using messY 5.0 are getting errors when they try to view a cam of another party using 5.5.... something about updating their software.

additionally cam users who had no problems on 5.0, upgrade to 5.5 and suddenly have a grey screen... well lets address that one first....

recently we helped bunny fix her cam... the first step was diagnosing the problem. she said she had no probs on 5.0.. then 5.5 was a grey screen. so the first step was to check her virtual machine version. ( click start.. then run and enter C:Windows\notepad vminst.log look about 10 lines down for existing version of virtual machine..  double check if it says no file found, by clicking start, find, file, vminst.log and open with notepad)

we discovered she had an old version, so bunny updated her virtual machine.   once she had downloaded and installed it, rebooted, INSTALLED IT AGAIN! , and rebooted.. we had bunny re run her mess*Y* installer file... C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Installs\ymsgrie.exe

and .... then her cam worked fine... the trick for some is running the  virtual machine twice so that it makes incoming and existing version the same (3809) then reinstalling messY so it  sees the updated java engine...

here's another  fix sent in by paul ~ his problem was specifically related to win xp, logitech cam and messy 5.5....

1. Remove BOTH Yahoo WebCam Upload and Viewer Wrappers. (On my system -this seems to be the ONLY way the cam will work in Messenger after a fresh Messenger install).  EXCELLENT tip too...
2. Un-install Yahoo Messenger (custom - selecting ALL files).
3. Reboot.
4. Install Yahoo Messenger.
5. Start webcam in Messenger. (It should start fine. For me, the webcam wrapper files seem to have been the problem)
6. In Messenger, go to: TOOLS - VIEW FRIEND'S - WEBCAM.
7. Type in my own name and view myself :)
8. Reboot
9. Go into chat using Java. Start webcam to reload the webcam upload
wrapper. You can also use this page
10. Reboot.
11. Run Messenger and webcam.
12. Go into Java chat using any nickname other than the primary account name that the camera is running on. If Yahoo asks to broadcast the camera using the current nickname, press NO.
13. Right click on anyone's name with a running webcam and go to view, BUT replace their name with the primary account name that your(my) own camera is running on and view the cam... Webcam Viewer Wrapper is now loaded.
14. Reboot

thanks again paul

oh wait.. he has more!! woohoo!!

* Super WebCam help for people using Windows XP.
(If you are using Windows XP, did you know that you may have a built-in
firewall running silently in the background?)
* Also applies to people using firewalls - See your software
documentation for further details

So you have a high-speed (Cable, DSL or T1/LAN) Internet connection and
your WebCam runs fine in normal mode, but you can't seem to get Super
WebCam to operate. You believe that you have done everything correctly,
but underneath your WebCam image you get this message - "Super mode is
unavailable".

Things you must know:
1.  Yourself and the person viewing you must both have high-speed
Internet connections.
2.  Make sure in Yahoo preferences under the heading of Super WebCam
that you have selected the correct speed for your Internet connection.
The person viewing you must also do the same.

Are you still getting - "Super mode is unavailable"?
Then it is possible that either yourself or the person viewing you may
have a firewall running that does not allow incoming and outgoing TCP
connections on port 5100... The port Yahoo Supercam uses.

In Windows XP you may chose from either of TWO options to correct this:

1.  Disable Windows XP Internet connection firewall (ICF).

In Control Panel, double-click Networking and Internet Connections, and
then click Network Connections.
Right-click the connection (the one that connects you to the internet)
on which you would like to disable ICF, and then click Properties.
On the Advanced tab, click the box to clear the option to Protect my
computer or network.

2.  Grant ongoing ICF access to port 5100 for incoming and outgoing TCP
connections. (Without having to completely disable your firewall)

In Control Panel, double-click Networking and Internet Connections, and
then click Network Connections.
Right-click the connection that connects you to the internet, and then
click Properties.
On the Advanced tab, click the button for Settings. Click Add to open a
new port.
In the Description box, type Yahoo Supercam. In the Name or IP address
box, type 127.0.0.1.
In the External port and Internal port boxes, type 5100. And finally,
click TCP, then press OK.
