warning, some of these are registry tricks. when in doubt, call someone else over to do it :) and I encourage you to search the net for another answer if you do not think this is correct.

-check virtual machine version-

not sure you need to update virtual machine? or just want to compare versions incoming versus current?  http://www.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm40.htm  used to be the site...  use win updates now. you can get 3805 here.

After you install Virtual Machine you can check (Incoming VM Version) and (Existing VM Version) C:\Windows\vminst.log file using WordPad and look for these two lines, Existing VM Version and Incoming VM Version (about 10-12 lines down). or from Start, Run C:\Windows\notepad vminst.log  < this will work also.

-change your default browser-

internet explorer is so easy to do this in>

just click start, then settings, then control panel, then internet options. on that pop up>>> select the programs tab. at the bottom you will see a box that says "Internet Explorer should check to see if it is the default browser."  then click apply, then okay  a second option is  to us a small program i found that sets the default browser.  setbrowser  is very nice and simple. it is found about 4/5 of the way down  on this page  http://www.suttondesigns.com/EnigmaBrowser/index.html (which just happens to be a small full feature free browser ~the 3.6 build )

-set a new homepage-

IE: when open, click on tools (at top) then internet options, on the first tab (general) you will see a box at the top that says address. you can click use current to select the page you are on. or you can type in an address, like /  then click  apply :) done

NETSCAPE: when open, click edit, then preferences. you should see a section that says homepage. again you have the use current page option, or the option to type in a page address, like http://www.myraqs.com   click ok when done

opera: when open, click navigation, then set home page. there will be a window homepage option and a global homepage. you will also see a button by both that says use active (this means the currently opened window.) just like with ie and Netscape you can select to use the current window or type one in. then click  ok :) done

-change your screen properties-

want to see the how to video?

is everything all scrunched on your screen? or looks weird? you might check your display settings. installing a new program or uninstalling on can sometimes change the settings. or even doing routine updates. a recent driver update messed my colors until i reset  them in display properties. so >>> how to fix ? you can right click an empty section of your desktop, then  select properties.  select the settings tab. the setting available are  640x480  800x600   1024x768  and  1280x1024

personally i have mine set to 1024x768 for the ease of having multiple windows open and being able to see them all at that size. however, they are small! most programs look fine at 800x600.  if you want to try a larger setting, just move the slider on the left of the pop up on the setting tab. click apply, it will ask you if you want to change the settings. then it will black out as windows changes the settings, then you usually have an option of accepting or rejecting the new setting.

this tab is also where you can change form 256 to 16 or even 32 bit colors. be careful messing with that, you often change this after updating  video drivers.

-shortcut keys (or f-this )-

you can access this  list in a secret menu on windows, just hold down the alt key  at the same time as the f4 key- kidding!!!  that command will close the current window. have one of those M$ keyboards. with a windows key... well it does have a purpose~ is a quick way to pop up the start menu.

a few more for the m$ keyboard,

Windows Logo+R: Run dialog box
Windows Logo+F1: Help
Windows Logo+E: Windows Explorer

Windows Logo+F: Find files or folders

regular shortcuts

ALT+F4: Quit program
CTRL+ESC: Open Start menu
ALT+TAB: Switch between open programs
CTRL+C: Copy
CTRL+V: Paste
CTRL+B: Bold
CTRL+U: Underline
CTRL+I: Italic
CTRL+X: Cut
SHIFT: Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you insert a CD-ROM to bypass the automatic-run feature
ALT+underlined letter in menu: Opens the menu

wanna set a HOTKEY to open a program, and don't want to download some tool? Find the icon of the program and right-click on the icon. Choose Properties from the menu and make sure you're in the Shortcut
tab. Place your cursor in the Shortcut key field, pick a function key or a letter you would like to assign the shortcut to, and press it. Hit Apply in the bottom-right corner. To open the program, press Ctrl + Alt + "Shortcut Key" or the function
key you assigned to it.
