this is purely an exercise to demonstrate how to edit your registry.  remember to back up your registry before you play in it! and remember, examples posted on nhyrvana are for educational purposes only.  ( want to learn in depth? ) for those who recall the first "lesson" , back in early 2002, where we replaced the ad with a webpage ~ we no longer offer that lesson. sorry :-( but cl has a new option ~ if you don't want a small graphic like below as a replacement, he has a link packed replacement. worth a look see if you do more than chat.

it is very simple. to do. just follow the few steps on the right....  why do this when there are tools you may ask.... well, you never know what maybe in the tools and you can see what the reg file contains if you save to desktop and open in notepad. 

If you do not do it correctly you will see a HUGE ASS section that says page can not be displayed.  STILL!!!  if you do get that then you have not followed directions!!!   

you will need to redo the directions to correctly install it, or rerun your messenger install file to  undo it all. so..  instructions on the right >> and pictures and reg keys below..... its just right click save pic to c drive, and click and open the registry file... you should save to desktop and right click select edit to view and then right click select merge to add. restart messenger. done.  

yes this works for xp! my elderly grandpa who used win 3.11 until last September was able to do this on his xp comp in a minute.....so can you :)

step one. close messenger!! close messenger!! close messenger!! close messenger!!

step two find the image below that you want to use. RIGHT click the pic and save to C:\  not in any folder, not in briefcase, not on your desktop, in C:\   ( an image in there would have a path like this C:\lovepeacejoy.gif ) 

step three NOW click the pic on this page you selected and select OPEN , it will set your comp to show the pic you saved in  C:\  problem? then save to your DESKTOP, then right click and select merge.

step four  open messenger and see it with no ad.  if you do not do it correctly you will see a HUGE section that says page can not be displayed. you will need to redo the directions to correctly

don't like these images? fine.. find a different one. crop and save in the same dimensions, and save as the SAME file name.

Some XP users seem to be unable to do this fix... not sure WHY!   Did it here  on 2 XP comps no prob...    but if that's the problem, just kill all the ads  with this file.  Courtesy of CL.
