once  again this is by no means a comprehensive tutorial  on right clicking, just a point in the right direction.  a nudge into the realm of  what you can do :)

now this will just show you some of the options on right clicking, there are scripts  you can get to add functions to your right click on your computer, or even great dhtml scripts to add right click menus to web pages you make, but for now,....... basics

these are the options you should see when you right click on a form or fill in the blank section on a web page. it will allow you to edit the text of paste text into it.

rightclick options

this is what many will see if they right click  an image on a web page

there are options to save the pic, set as wall paper, or just save on desktop. you also can view the properties, see if it is a bmp file....a jpg file...or a gif file.

note my right click menu has an addition of download with dap, that is my download accelerator program. the right click menu is also known as a context menu

my favorite option is grayed out here, as it was not a link, but i love the open link in a new window option!!

right click options

if you right click an file on your computer, you will see some of these options

(please note that antivirus and WinZip are programs not everyone has, you may or may not have the same items.)

delete will remove the  file from your computer, send to has options such as briefcase, floppy or mail.

rename allows you to change a typo in spelling or to totally change the files name.

do not change the names of program files or  windows standard icons! no matter how cute ya think your recycle bin would be if it was named "bob"

they will not run if you do!

right click options

right click option can even be used to navigate the web, as a back and forward option appear if you just click in the text section of a page

if you like right click and would like a quick way to grab the path of files when you are wandering your comp ~ you can look for tools like CopyPath its small. and free! and as always~ check for other great tools on the site..

see, that isn't so hard.... now go practice!!

many webmasters will have right click disabled on their site.  ( i have tried it on many pages) this is to prevent most casual surfers for stealing images of content with out having to do some work. ( they have to actively steal your work)  some do not appreciate it... just realize its a necessary evil on the net. and there is very little you can do to prevent a knowledgeable surfer from stealing pics or content ~

want to TRY anyway to disable right clicks?

copy this into the html before the /head> tag.

norightclick script

just paste it in exactly, or edit the msg var.. where it says nono! change that message.

this will pop up a small alert box only on  Internet explorer. it does not prevent folks from just clicking view. then source....

other tools and ideas to disable thieving? you can try code scramblers ~ like the one at stickysauce

dynamic drive has a script or two to disable the right clicks

or find another tool...

be aware that any of these can be worked around, with other programs.... but sometimes you do need to take the efforts to try and protect the site and information.

and there are reasons to NOT disable the right click...

there are surfers who use the context menu to navigate.. check it. it does say back and forward...

some people may like to select open link in a new window.. rather than leaving your site to check a link...

it assumes everyone viewing your site is a thief.. and is insulting. now im not saying all site viewers are honest and wont steal your hard work.. but most wont.  use image only disablers, or encrypt source if you can.

you can also add digital watermarks or image information into gifs and jpgs.. copyright info and more. to deter thieves.

if you realllllly want to safeguard your pics or info do not put it on the web.
