What version of virtual machine do i have?
After you install Virtual Machine you can check (Incoming VM Version) and (Existing VM Version) C:\Windows\vminst.log file using WordPad and look for these two lines, Existing VM Version and Incoming VM Version (about 10-12 lines down). or from Start, Run C:\Windows\notepad vminst.log < this will work also.
a second way to check.... ~ thanks E2C
The easiest way to find the VM version for Windows 2000 is to do a search for the MSJAVA.DLL file and then look at the properties of it for the version. You can go to start, programs, accessories, system tools, system information, software, and likely find it under that heading also but it is just as easy usually to look up the dll file in the search.
Virtual machine: this is the name given to Microsoft's java engine. XP does not come with it btw... it was in service pack one though.
Java : a programming language used to create interactive element son websites, like chat and games applets. It is not to be confused with javascript.
this is the file you need as well to fix your comp if you deleted the teddybear file... it is not a virus.. is a critical component of windows....
don't use internet explorer browser? then you need to update to Netscape browser version 4.76 at http://www.netscape.com version 7.0 is not recommended especially if you want to voice chat. use a mac? check here and opera and the big Y don't get along for chat :( sorry
USE DSL? call your provider to make sure they support the dynamic java~ some are growing so fast they cant keep up....
An influx of cable and dsl users who could not use java chat at all lead had us puzzled. (despite virtual machine updates and windows criticals ) While wandering around some
OLD help pages, we noted a line about dynamic java connections and some isps not supporting them...... a light bulb went off. and the chase was on....
Several phone calls, emails and im's later the answer was confirmed. Due to the incredible growth of DSL and cable internet service, SOME providers in SOME areas are unable to assure dynamic java connections to SOME users. This means is is not always the chat provider or your computer preventing you from accessing a site or option on the net. Most providers are working hard to improve and implement this, but you may initially sacrifice some java functions for speed. "So I just cant use java chat", you say.
Well actually you can be locked out of accessing your bank accounts online, some mail providers, online games and more. So if you are considering DSL or cable upgrades on your ISP ~ ask them how they are doing on the java.
Question: Help i am getting java errors, and told i need to updated java! but i did. both sun and ms java are on my comp!
Answer: You need to reset your default java engine? this is sometimes needed if you have several versions of sun java and virtual machine. defaultvm.html has details.
What up with the java situation? why is it so hard to get from MS now?
In March of 2002, Sun Microsystems sued Microsoft, alleging in part that distributing the Microsoft VM in Windows XP to customers who wanted it via the Web was not authorized by Microsoft's license and therefore constituted copyright infringement. Microsoft chose to stop as requested by Sun, and did so as of July 10, 2002. Practically speaking, for Windows XP users who do not have the Microsoft VM and want a copy, there will be a short period from July 10 to the time Microsoft is able to make it available again through Service Pack 1 during which Windows XP users will be unable to get a virtual machine from Microsoft.” * courtesy Ctechie.
