Now I'm not talking about is it a "good program" or even one you will use and love.... I mean is it one that you can even TRY with out having to pay $19.95 or more for a registration code. What will happen in 10 uses, 20 uses or 30 days? Take a few minutes to read before you download and see what that program is. Is it freeware? shareware? linkware? toyware? mailware? spyware? thiefware? warez? If you just said 'huh?' don't worry, hopefully this will give you just enough info to speak intelligently about downloads.- Freeware ~ these are programs that allow you to use for free ~ forever. some may have no requirements for download , others may ask you to fill out a form with some info. Realize these programs may also lack support services.
- Shareware ~ This is a time limited or use limited version of a program. For example, it may be 10 uses, or 30 days. They want you to try it, and love it so much that you will buy the program. Some shareware will let you reinstall it again and restart the shareware period or use an honor system, but most wont work at all after the trial period is over.
- Linkware / Mailware / Toyware ~ Most common in fonts, backgrounds, graphics, or some small programs. The names are pretty self explanatory ~ linkware asks that you provide a button or text link if used on a website. Toyware and mailware will list an address in the FAQ or info files and ask that you send a small toy or postcard to the creator if you use and / or like the download.
- Warez ~ The darker side of the 'net, these programs are 'ripped' or cracked versions of retail programs. The user/buyer name and serial numbers come in an info file with the download and functions just like a registered program with out paying $19.95. * illegal* Some of these sites may also give you an extra surprise or two ( virus or trojan ) if your not careful.
Those few extra minutes checking what they expect of you when you download that "ware" may be worth it. You may see that its not worth a 15MB download on a dial up connection if you only have 10 days to try it. |

Spyware / Thiefware ~ these are technically not downloads, often are small programs or extras that have bad intentions.
